How can we change ?

By working together; by learning from positive and negative experiences from around the world; by seeking new knowledge; by being inclusive and innovative in seeking solutions; by sharing a common vision for African fisheries; and by generating a common voice on our  fisheries.

Over the last decade or so this voice has been emerging….politicians, managers, fishers, the fishing industry and environmental groups are calling for change.  The Partnership for African Fisheries is now responding to this call. Created in 2009, the Partnership will facilitate and support change and reform.

The New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) a programme of the African Union will champion this pan-Africa approach and pull together the many threads required to weave cooperation, integration and unity across a diverse continent.  The Partnership will be guided by a Ministerial Task Force for African Fisheries comprising like-minded politicians.  They will drive change and ensure an effective voice of African fisheries is heard within international arenas of fisheries policy, trade, development and human rights.

Change isn’t easy, nor can it be done quickly – it will take time and effort to introduce new robust approaches that are accepted and that work. The Partnership will start by building on initiatives that are already underway; it will assist fishers, processors, traders and governments to work together with regional and international organisations in order to find better ways to go about the business of fishing - ways that will benefit more people.
